Vinted charges sellers nothing, with no cap on how much you can list. The buyer pays a protection fee on top of your asking price — you receive the full amount you listed it for. That means your only costs as a seller are what you paid for the item and your packaging materials. eBay is free for private sellers too now, but only up to 300 listings a month and only on sales to UK buyers — see the Vinted vs eBay guide for the full breakdown.
A typical packaging cost is £0.50–£0.75 for a polybag (most clothing), or £1–£1.50 if you're using a jiffy bag or small box for something that needs more protection. Buying polybags in bulk (100-pack) brings the per-item cost down significantly.
What counts as a good ROI? Most consistent resellers aim for at least 100% ROI (doubling their money) on charity shop finds, and 50–80% on Vinted-to-Vinted flips where the margin is tighter. Below 50% ROI on low-value items, the time spent listing and packing starts to eat into the return.
The HMRC note: Selling your own clothes is fine. Buying specifically to resell is trading income. Once you're over £1,000 in a tax year you're expected to declare it on Self Assessment — the trading allowance isn't a loophole, just a threshold.
